Zero Waste Campaign

The industry-induced problems in Kerala are many be it pollution , health issues , loosing economic dependence and exploitation and imbalances in resource sharing and many more. Thanal started the industry watch programme with Sridhar taking keen interest in pulp industries. Parallely our work with Greenpeace also started by exposing the heavy pollution in the Eloor-Edayar Industrial Area, especially due to the only DDT manufacturing facility in the country - the Hindustan Insecticides Limited. The following are the important area of work. In most of these areas we work with the local community groups, in strengthening their understanding and capacities.

Some of our areas of work here is

  • Industries in the State – especially the chemical, toxic and the water-power intensive ones
  • Specific Focus areas - The Eloor-Edayar Industrial Area consisting of pesticide-fertilizer and other chemical factories.
  • Pulp industries in the State - Hindustan Newsprint Limited, Mavoor Gwalior Rayons
  • Advocacy and Information support – prepared critics of the EIA in the case of Saurashtra Cements , Binani Zinc, Coca-Cola etc.
